After suffering a severe financial and operational crisis, VARIG, the largest Latin American airline, applied for protection under the Brazilian bankruptcy law. VARIG was the first Brazilian company to make use of the law, which had recently been introduced to rescue major companies during debt restructuring.

Lufthansa Consulting was contracted to develop the operational recovery plan that has been delivered to the Brazilian courts as part of the company's legal recovery plan. The financial restructuring plan has been prepared by UBS Securities LLC.
